(NC)—Canada's food industry is responsible for producing safe food, and has a good record doing so. However, sometimes situations occur that may pose a health risk, particularly to those who have food allergies, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) must initiate a recall. The CFIA works with the food company involved in the recall to make sure that all hazardous products have been removed from the store shelves. These could include foods that can cause allergic reactions in some people, including:

• peanuts
• tree nuts (almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews,
• hazelnuts/filberts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pinenuts, pistachios, walnuts)
• sesame seeds
• milk
• eggs
• fish, crustaceans (e.g. crab, crayfish, lobster, shrimp)
• shellfish (e.g. clams, mussels, oysters, scallops)
• soy
• wheat

• sulphites

In cases where the health risk is particularly serious, the CFIA issues public warnings. These warnings are posted under Food Recalls / Allergy Alerts on the CFIA Web site at www.inspection.gc.ca

If you have food allergies – or know someone that does -- and want to receive immediate, up-to-date information on foods being recalled, you can sign up for the CFIA's free "Allergy Alerts and Food Recalls" email subscription service at www.inspection.gc.ca .
